Family history

Edgar Snell was born in 1890 at Walkeringham he was the son of the late Henry Snell a domestic gardener and Emma Snell née Hesslewood of Heapham, Gainsborough.

His father Henry Snell was born in 1848 he died in 1901 aged 54 yrs, his mother Emma Hesslewood was born in 1852 both were born in Thornton, Yorkshire, they were married on 28th September 1874 at Sutton upon Derwent, Yorkshire, they went on to have 7 children.

In the 1911 census his widowed mother is a housekeeper, she is living at Heapahm village near Gainsborough, she is shown as being 59 yrs a widow and house keeper, she has with her 2 of her children, Walter 26 yrs and Edgar 21 yrs a general labourer, she is a housekeeper for George Throop 30 yrs single and a market gardener.

Military history

Private Edgar Snell enlisted at Misterton whilst residing at Gainsborough, he served with the Sherwood Ranger, he landed in Egypt on 27th April 1916, he was killed in action on 13th December 1916 at Salonica, he is buried at Stuma Military Cemetery, Greece.
