Family History

Eric Oswald Read was born in 1888 at Thetford and baptised on 29th August 1888 at St Cuthberts Church, Thetford, Norfolk he was the son of George Odden a solicitor and his first wife Dora Read née Simpson of 22 White Hart Street, Theftford. His father George Odden was born in 1857 at Mildenhall, his mother Dora Simpson was born in 1861 at Frant, Sussex, she died in 1893 she was 32 yrs, they were married on 8th February 1887 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent , they had a further child, Doris Odden Read born in 1891. His father re married Ada Barons Travers born 1868 in Ireland, they were married on 18th September 1895 at East Wretham, Norfolk, they had a child Una Mary born 1898 Thetford. In the 1911 census the family were living at 22 White Hart Street, Thetford, George Odden Read 54 yrs is a solicitor, he is living with his second wife Ada Barons 43 yrs and his children, Eric Oswald 22 yrs a theological student and Una Mary 13 yrs , also living with them are two servants. Eric Oswald married Alice Reade in 1918 at Kendall, they had a daughter Dora Oswald Read born 21st October 1918. The family lived at ‘ Gorsfield’ Giles Lane, Canterbury.

Military History

Chaplain The Reverend Eric Oswald Read, was Killed in Action on 3rd October 1918 ministering to the wounded in a small dug-out when it was hit by a shell, killing him outright near EpinoyFrance. He is buried at Chapel Corner Cemetery, Sauchy- Lestree, France.
