Joseph Gregory was born in 1887 at Staveley, Derbyshire he was the son of John Thomas a coal miner hewer and Selina Gregory née Brooks of 98 Welbeck Road, Bolsover, Derbyshire. His father John Thomas was born in 1856 at Holloway, Derbyshire, his mother Selina Brooks was born in 1856 at Baslow, Derbyshire, they were married on 31st January 1876 at Staveley, they went on to have 8 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census his parents were living at 98 Welbeck Road, Bolsover, John Thomas 55 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Selina 55 yrs and their children, Blanche Sales widow 34 years a daughter, Charles 25 yrs a coal miner hewer , daughter in law Kathleen 36 yrs and daughter Florence 17 yrs of age. Joseph married Amy Fletcher (born 20th January 1889 Kilburn )in 1908 their marriage was recorded in the Rotherham registration district, they lived at 41 Church Lane, Dinnington, they had 2 sons, Thomas William born 12th December 1909 and Wilson born 3rd September 1912. In the 1911 census Joseph and his family are living at 41 Park Terrace, Dinnington, Joseph is 24 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Amy 22 yrs and their son Thomas William 1 year of age. Commencing 12th July 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week.
Private Joseph Gregory enlisted at Retford whilst residing at Dinnington, , he served the Sherwood Yeomanry, he died on 24th November 1914 and is buried at Dinnington Church Cemetery.
