Charles William Locke was born in 1895 at Radford, he was the son of John William a coal miner hewer and Amelia Ann Locke née Hicks and the brother of John Henry, Alice Gertrude, Amelia Ann and Thomas Andrew Locke.
His father John William was bornin 1872 at Nottingham, his mother Amelia Ann Hicks was born in 1874 at Bracebridge, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1894 at Nottingham, they went on to have 5 children.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 27 Seventh Street Wallsend Northumberland John William 39 yrs a coal miner hewer is living with his wife Amelia Ann 37 yrs and their children, Charles William 16 yrs a coal miner handler, John Henry 14 yrs a coal miner driver, Alice Gertrude 12 yrs a scholar Amelia Ann 10 yrs a scholar, Thomas Andrew 7 yrs of age.

Private Charles Locke enlisted after 1 January 1916 at Nottingham and served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he joined the battalion in France. Three of the men killed on 19th August 1917 are buried at Tyne Cot cemetery - graves LXIV.G1; G3 and Charles in G.4. At 8-30 pm on the 19th a heavy barrage targeted battalion HQ and one shell killed three machine gunners (Lewis gunners from battalion) and wounded a number of men. Charles was one of the machine gunners killed.
