Family History

Joseph Chevins was born in 1893 at Lincoln, he was the son of the late George a farm labourer and Anna Diane of Costock, Nottinghamshire, His father George was born in 1851 in Hertfordshire, he died in 1902 at Loughborough aged 55 yrs, his mother Anna Diane was born in 1858 at Exthorpe, Yorkshire, they were married prior to 1882 , they had 8 children, Polly b1182, Rosie b1884, Emily b1887, George b1889, John b1892, Joseph b1893, James b1897 and Arthur b1901. Following his father’s death his mother re married in 1902 at Loughborough she married Maurice Staples a farm labourer. In the 1911 census the family are living at Club House, Costock, Maurice Staples 67 yrs a farm labourer is living with his wife Anna Diane Staples 47 yrs and their children, Herbert Staples 23 yrs a farm labourer, George Chevins 22 yrs a labourer, John Chevins 19 yrs a brick layers apprentice, Joseph 18 yrs a general labourer, James Chevins 14 yrs and Arthur Chevins 10 yrs, all the Chevins are noted as step children. Joseph married Hilda Valentine Smith in 1913 their marriage was recorded in the Loughborough registration district, they lived at The Cottage, Costock and had two children, Gertrude b1915 and Phyllis born 1916.

Military History

Corporal Joseph Chevins enlisted at Ilkeston whilst residing at Costock, he served with the 2/6th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 7th September 1917 and is buried at Bois Guillaume Communal Cemetery Extension Grave Reference: B 8 A

Extra Information

His brother Private George Chevins enlisted at Ware, Hertfordshire, he served with the 1st battalion Grenadier Guards, landing France on 19th October 1914. He died of wounds on 16th October 1915 and is buried at Lillers Communal Cemetery 4.C.55
