Nottingham - Mapperley - World War Two
On its own island at the juncion of Plains Road and Woodthorpe Drive, this Grade II listed monument was originally erected in the aftermath of the Great War, paid for by public subscription. There was space for two plates bearing Second World War fatalities to be added later (photos below) along with a familiar tribute:
'ALSO IN MEMORY OF THOSE/ WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WORLD WAR/ 1939-1945/ THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD/ AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD,/ AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM/ NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN/ AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN/ AND IN THE MORNING/ WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.'
