Cecil Dove was born in 1899 at Sturton by Stow and was the son of Toynbee a farm worker and Harriett Dove née Herrick of Sturton by Stow, Lincolnshire. His father Toynbee was born in 1871 at Navenby, his mother Harrriet Herrick was born in 1872 at Wickenby, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1893 their marriage was recorded in the Lincoln registration area, they had a further child a daughter Lucy born in 1900 at Sturton by Stow. In the 1911 census the family are living at Sturton by Stow and are shown as Toynbee 40 yrs a farm worker, he is living with his wife Harriet 39 yrs and their son Cecil 12 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Cecil Dove enlisted at Newark whilst residing at Harby and served with the 2nd battalion Alexandra Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 22nd March 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.
