Family History

Horace Hurt was born in 1899 and was the son of the late George a drayman and Harriett Hurt née Brown of 15, Sprotborough Terrace, Salford St., Nottingham. His father George was born was born in Nottingham in 1853 and his mother was born in 1857 in Worksop, they were married in 1881 in Nottingham and went on to have 12 children, sadly 1 died in infancy their children were all born in Nottingham and shown on the 1901/1911 census were, William b1879, Charles b1882, Elizabeth 1884,Ernest b1886 Herbert Owen b1888, Georgina 1890, Gertrude 1892, Edith b1896, May b1897, May b1897, Horace b1899 and Bertie b1900. His father George died in 1903 in Nottingham he was 49 yrs of age. In the 1911 census the family are living at 15 Sprotsborough Terrace, Nottingham and are shown as Harriett 54 yrs a widow a lace hand , she is living with her children Ernest 25 yrs a general labourer, Gertrude 19 yrs a curtain hand, Edith 15 yrs a box hand, May 14 yrs an errand girl, Horace 12 yrs a scholar and Bertie 11 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Horace Hurt, enlisted at Nottingham and he initially served with service number 4671 in the Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment before transferring to the 9th Battalion Machine Gun Corps, he was killed in action on 9th February 1918. He is buried in Bedford House Cemetery. (enclosure no 4, II.B.32).

Nottingham Post obituary (abridged) 22 February 1918: HURT, killed in action February 9th, Private Horace Hurt, Machine Gun Corps, age 19, sister Eliza Ann, brother Jim (in India), Horace Hurt of 15 Sprotborough Terrace, mother sisters, brothers, (sister Georgina and brother George). In memoriam published 8th February 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HURT. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Pte. Horace Hurt, killed in action February 9th, 1918. Too far away thy grave to see, but not too far to think of thee. – From his loving sister and brother, Georgina and George, and nephews. “HURT. – In loving memory of Pte. Horace Hunt, M.G.C., killed in action February 9th, 1918, aged 19. He went away so bravely, he held his head so high, we little thought he had left us, when he kissed and said goodbye. – From his sorrowing mother, sisters, and brothers.” In memoriam published 9th February 1920 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HURT. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Private Horace Hurt, killed in action February 9th,1918. We cannot clasp your hand, dear brother, your face we cannot see, but let this little token tell, that we still remember thee. – From his loving sister Georgina & brother George. “HURT. – In loving memory of Private Horace Hurt, killed in action February 9th, 1918.
