Family History

Willie Almond was born on 13th May 1890 and was the son of the late John a woodcutter and Mary Almond née Hodson of Chestnut House, Harby, Newark. His father John was born in 1852 he died in 1908 aged 56 yrs, his mother Mary Hobson was born in 1857 at Harby, they were married in 1879 their marriage was recorded in the Newark registration district, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their children were John Thomas b1880, Ada b1883, Arthur b1885, Albert b1887, Willie b1890, Mabel Ann b1892 and Harry b1893 all were born in Harby. In the 1911 census the family are living at Harby village and are shown as Mary 54 yrs a widow living on her own means, she is living with her children, Ada 27 yrs an assistant school teacher, Arthur 25 yrs a farm labourer, Albert 24 yrs a farm labourer, Willie 20 yrs a wagoner on a farm, and Mabel Alice 19 yrs no occupation listed

Military History

Private Willie Almond enlisted at Lincoln whilst residing at Harby, he initially served with the service number 38234 in the Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 21st March 1918 whilst serving with the 2/6th battalion North Staffordshire Regiment. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
