He was the son of Richard William, an agricultural labourer, and his wife, Harriett. In 1891 Richard and Harriett were living at Green Dyke Lane, Sutton, Lincolnshire, with their three children, Harriett Emma (18), Mary Elizabeth (16) and Richard William (13). Ten years later, Harriett was still living at the same address with her daughter, Harriet Emma and son, Richard, but is the head of the household, her husband having been admitted as a patient (institutional) at Bracebridge Asylum, Bracebridge Heath, Lincolnshire. By the time of the 1911 census Richard, now employed as a roadmender, and Harriett are living at Black Barn, Long Sutton, Lincolnshire, along with their son who is working as a farm labourer. The census records that Richard and Harriett had had three children born alive of whom only two were still living.
He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Probable identity but no evidence to date of connection with Nottingham. He is also commemorated on the Gedney Drove End and Dawesmere memorial.
