William Goddard was born in 1886 at Nottingham and was the son of William (senior) a shoe and boot maker and Emma Goddard née Holmes. His father William (senior) was born in 1852 at Nottingham and his mother Emma Holmes was born in 1854 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1871 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have the following children, Thomas b1874, Florence b1878, Arthur b1880, George b1882 and William b1886. William Goddard married his wife May Graham on 19th May 1916 at the Nottingham Registry Office, they lived at 4 Kenton Square, Edward Street, Nottingham and had the following children William born 13th April 1909 and George Henry born 29th April 1914. His wife May later lived at 15 Mortimer Street, Nottingham Following his death his widow was allocated a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week commencing 15th May 1916. for her and her two children.
Private William Goddard enlisted on 30th November 1914 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 28 yrs and 4 months, his address as 4 Kenton Square, Edward Street, Nottingham and his occupation as that of a slater. He was posted to the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters on 9 December 1914. Landing at Gallipoli on 6th September 1915 he was wounded (gun shot wound to left side) on 4 October 1915 whilst the battalion occupied trenches in the Jephson's Post area. One officer described it as 'exciting and dangerous work' William was taken to 33rd Brigade Field Ambulance , 11th Division but died of his wounds the next day. He is buried in the beautiful Azmak Cemetery Suvla, grave I.F.4 John Morse
