Family History

Wilfred Howard Smith was born in 1896 the son of William a horse driver/labourer and Gertrude Maud Smith of Nottingham. William was born in 1867 at South Shields, Gertrude Maud was born in 1871 at Finsbury, they were married in 1894 and went on to have 6 children, 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 11 Devon Street, Nottingham, Wilfred is 14 yrs of age and a labourer. Wilfred married Ethel Hutchinson (born 14th May 1895) in 1916 at Nottingham, they lived at 27 Mowbray Street, Nottingham. Commencing 17th March 1919 his widow Ethel was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Private Wilfred Howard Smith enlisted at Derby, he initially served with the service number 6584 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 16th August 1918 and is buried at Aval Wood Military Cemetery, Vieux-Berquin (grave ref I.C.3)
