Family History

Joseph was born in 1854 in the Basford Registration District. He married Emmeline Smith in 1875 at Radford Nottingham. She died in 1908 at Nottingham aged fifty two. Joseph married Ada L Hailes at Nottingham in 1910. In 1911 they lived at 22 Owthorpe Grove Sherwood Nottingham. Ada was forty three years old. She later lived at 30 Dornoch Avenue Sherwood.

Military History

Joseph James Whelband Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Depot) worked in the recruiting office in Hucknall in early 1915. He died of natural causes (cerebal apoplexy) on 3rd October 1915. His death was subject of an article in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 18th February 1916. 'MANSFIELD RECRUITING SERGEANT. SUDDEN DEATH IN NOTTINGHAM. Colour-Sergeant Joseph James Whelband, of the Sherwood Foresters, who resided at Owthorpe-grove, Nottingham, died suddenly yesterday [3rd October 1915]. He was 60 years of age, and possessed a long service medal, which was presented to him at a meeting in the Mansfield Market-place. When the war broke out he responded to the call to render what assistance he was able, and he had for about 12 months been on duty as a recruiting sergeant at Mansfield.'
