Herbert William Swallow was born in 1894 at Carrington, he was the son of Daisy Susan Swallow born 1873 at Cromwell, of 221 Alfred Street, Nottingham. Herbert was living with his grandparents in the 1911 census at 14 Ramsey Street, Carrington they were William Swallow 85 yrs retired, and Sarah Jane 66 yrs, Herbert William Swallow 18 yrs is their grandson. His mother was living with Lionel James Breeze 47 yrs a commercial traveller are living at Middle Lane, Chilwell,in the 1911 census she is shown as Susan Breeze 39 yrs, they are living with their children, Arthur Breeze 14 yrs, Clarice Breeze 9 yrs, Leslie Breeze 4 yrs and Annie Breeze 2 yrs of age. On the census they state they have been married for 16 yrs and have had 5 children, I has died in infancy or early childhood. However no marriage record can be traced for his mother for the year in question 1895, however a marriage has been found registered at Nottingham in 1937 between a Lionel James Breeze and Daisy Susan Swallow.

Military History

Rifleman Herbert William Swallow enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1st battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps, he was killed in action on 27th July 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
