William Richmond was born in 1887 at Nottingham, he was the son of John a warper in the lace trade and the late Ellen Richmond née Hopewell of 96 Hartley Street, Radford. John was born in 1847 at Nottingham, Ellen Hopewell was born in 1847 at Radford, she died in 1904 aged 57 yrs, they were married in 1865 at Radford and went on to have 8 children. In the 1911 census the family were living at 96 Hartley Road, Radford, John 64 yrs is a widower and a warper in the lace trade, he is living with his children, Ellen 31yrs a blouse machinist, Albert 29 yrs a house painter, and William 23 yrs a sugar boiler. William married Gertrude Pickering (born 22nd April 1887) in 1911 at Nottingham, she brought a child to the marriage, Leslie Thomas Pickering born 26th August 1906 they went on to have a son William Richmond born 29th December 1912. They lived at 45 Sherbrooke Road, Carrington. Commencing 28th April 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week.
Private William Richmond enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2/4th battalion Royal Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 24th August 1918 and is buried in Bronfay Farm Military Cemetery 2.F.13
