Ernest Priestley was born in 1893 at Horsingham, Lincolnshire, he was the son of William a domestic coachman and Phoebe Priestley née Ablewhite of The Grove, Haydn Road, Sherwood. William Priestley was born in 1865 at Kirkby Bain, Lincolnshire, Phoebe Ablewhite was born in 1859 at Horsingham, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Horncastle registration district, they had 4 children. David William born 1888, John born 1890 and George born 1891 His parents later lived at East Bridgford, Nottinghamshire.

Military History

Private Ernest Priestley enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Sherwood, he initially served with the service number 5582 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, later transferring to the Queens Own (Royal West Kent Regiment.) he was killed in action on 30th August 1918 and is buried at Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-LE-Grand, France.
