Arthur Liddiard

Arthur was born in Wethersfield, Essex, in 1881 (birth registered A/M/J, Braintree) the son of John Liddiard and Ellen Liddiard nee Powell. His father was born in Reading, Berkshire (alternative 1911 census, Salt Hill, Slough) while his mother was born at Abbey Dore, Hereford. Ellen Powell was the daughter of Edward and Lucy Powell and was baptised at Abbey Dore on 25 January 1843. John and Ellen were married in 1861 (marriage registered J/A/S Hereford). John and Ellen had a numerous family and eleven children were named on the census between 1871 and 1901; Martha (birth registered 1862 J/A/S Great Ouseburn Yorkshire), John (b. Great Stukeley Essex, birth registered 1864 J/F/M Lexden Essex), Edward (b. Ardleigh Essex, birth registered 1866 J/F/M Tendring Essex), Alexander (b. Woodham Mortimer Essex, birth registered 1868 J/A/S Maldon Essex)), William (b. Woodham Mortimer Essex, birth registered 1871 A/M/J Maldon), Bertha Mary Maud (b. Woodham Mortimer Essex, birth registered 1873 J/A/S Maldon Essex), Elizabeth Ellen/Ellen Elizabeth (b. Woodham Mortimer, birth registered 1879 J/F/M Braintree), Lucy (b. Wethersfield Essex, birth registered either 1879 J/F/M Braintree or 1880 A/M/J Maldon Essex), Arthur (b. Wethersfield Essex, birth registered A/M/J Braintree Essex), Mabel (b. Wethersfield Essex, birth registered 1883 O/N/D Braintree Essex) ad Eva (b. Wetheresfield Essex, birth registered O/N/D Braintree Essex). Their father, John, was a gardener domestic and in 1871 he and Ellen were living at Hill Farm House, Woodham Mortimer, Essex, with their five children, Martha (8), John (7), Edward (5), Alexander (2) and William (1 month). By 1881 John and Ellen (39) were living at Goldings, Wethersfield Essex. They already had nine children; Martha (18) a laundress, John (17) an under-gardener, Edward (15) a garden labourer, Alexander (12), William (10), Bertha (7), Ellen Elizabeth (4), Lucy (2) and a son under one month old who was named on the census as James. Although there is the record of the birth of a James Liddiard registered in 1881 A/M/J Chelmsford Essex, the baby died in 1881, death registered J/A/S Chelmsford, and he was probably the son of a different family; it is likely given the date and place of registration of Arthur's birth - 1881 A/M/J Braintree Essex - that the baby described as 'James' was later registered as 'Arthur'. In 1891 Ellen Liddiard (48) was living at 9 Waterloo Promenade, Nottingham, and described as the head of the household. She was working as a laundress and had eight children with her on the night of the census: Martha (28) a laundress, Alexander (22) a grocer's porter, Bertha (18) a laundress, Ellen (14) called 'Nellie' on the census, Lucy (12), Arthur (10), Mabel (7) and Eva (5). A John Liddiard (50) was recorded on the 1891 Census as head of household and living alone at Town Street, Edwinstowe. He was working as a gardener. Three years later the death was recorded in Nottingham of 17 year old Ellen Elizabeth Liddiard, born about 1877, death registered 1894 A/M/J, and she was likely to be John and Ellen's daughter. By 1901 John (61) and Ellen (59) were again living together at The Lodge, Woodthorpe House, Sherwood. Woodthorpe House appears to have been a convalescence home and linked to another convalescence home, The Cedars, Mansfield Road, Sherwood. John was a gardener and Ellen a laundress. Five of their children were in the household on the night of the census; Arthur (20) a carriage cleaner/groom, Martha (38) an ironer, Lucy (22) no occupation given, Mabel (17) an ironer, and Eva (14) a machinist (shirts). Their son, John, was probably at this time in Yorkshire, working as a gardener (domestic servant) and living at The Bothy, Weardley. The death of Ellen Liddiard at the age of 67 (b. abt 1842) was registered in Nottingham in 1909 (O/N/D). In 1911 the widowed John (71) was still living at the Lodge and working as a gardener. Also in the home was his son Arthur (32) a jobbing gardener and his youngest daughter, Eva (24) together with her hsuband Frank LW Turner (24), a warehouseman, whom she had married in 1910 (marriage registered O/N/D Basford). Frank and Eva's daughter, Evelyn M, was born the same year (birth registered J/A/S Nottingham). An Eva Turner died in 1955 at the age of 68 (b. abt. 1887, death registered June Nottingham) and her husband Frank LW Turner died aged 70 in 1958 (b. abt 1888, death registered September Nottingham). With the exception of Martha and John who have not yet been traced with any confidence on the 1911 Census, the following are believed to be the histories of Arthur's other surviving siblings: Edward Liddiard (46), a jobbing gardener, was living at 25 Alexandria Road, Englefield Green, Berkshire, with his wife Rachel (51) and two of their six children, Alice (13) and Redvers Robert (11). Alexander Liddiard (42) was a traveller (drapery), living at 71 Melrose Street, Sherwood, with his wife May (42). They had been married for 14 years and had had four children of whom only two sons survived; Everard (15), a greengrocer's errand boy, and Percy (11). William (40) was a market gardener living at Biggin, Castle Donington, Derbyshire, with his wife Ellen (41) and two daughters, Clara (6) and Mabel (5), the only surviving children of four. Bertha (38) was married to Charles Allcock (35), a carter, and they were living at 81 Norwood Road, Old Radford, with their four children, Edward (13), Charles (11), Leonard (9) and Nelly (5). They had been married for 14 years. Bertha died on 14 November 1949, home address 63 Norwood Road, Radford, administration awarded to Charles Allcock, an electrician. Lucy (32) was married to Harry Walter Exton (31) a gas meter tester for the City Council, and they were living at 30 Colville Terrace, Colville Street, Nottingham. They were married in 1901 (marriage registered A/M/J Nottingham) and only one of their two children had survived, Gladys Winifred (under 4 months). Harry Walter Exton died in 1828 aged 48 (b. abt. 1880); probate was awarded to his widow, Lucy Exton, and Arthur William Astle (printer). Harry and Lucy were living at 167 Sherwood Street, Nottingham, at the time of his death. Mabel (27) was living with her married sister, Lucy Exton at the time of the census (see above). Mabel was described as a boarder and was working as a sample ironer for a blouse manufacturer. She married Augustus William Lanaway at Nottingham Holy Trinity Church on 4 August 1913 (marriage registered J/A/S Nottingham). Mabel and her husband were living at 18 Matthias Road when Augustus, a chauffeur, attested on 6 May 1915 when he was 29 years 4 months old. He served with the Army Service Corps (MT) and was promoted to Corporal on 22 November 1917. Serving at home until 19 December 1915 he was then with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force from 20 December 1915 (338 Coy), serving in Salonika from 26 June 1916 until 24 March 1919. He embarked for UK on 25 March 1919 and was demobilised on 9 May 1919 to his home at 24 Daybrook Street, Sherwood, Nottingham, although at some point while he was in the army it appears from his service record that Mabel moved from Matthias Road to 3 Goswell Villas, London Road, Newbury. Mabel Lanaway died at the age of 84 (b. abt 1884) on 14 February 1968 (cremated 19 February 1968). CWGC records that Arthur was the son of 'the late John Liddiard' who lived at 24 Daybrook Street, Sherwood, Nottingham. John died in 1924 (death registered June Nottingham) aged 84 (b. abt. 1840). 24 Daybrook Street was the address given for Arthur in the notice of his death which appeared in the local paper in 1915 and was also the address to which John's son-in-law, Augustus Lanaway, the husband of Mabel, was demobilised to when he was discharged from the army in 1919. The Registers of Soldiers' Effects records that Arthur had two co-legatees, Miss Florence Bateson and his youngest sister Mrs Eva Turner. There is a record on the 1911 Census of a Florence Bateson (26) born abt. 1885 in Radford, an ironer, living with her parents Thomas and Mary Bateson, at 42 Bernard Street, Carrington, Nottingham, and this is likely to be the identity of Arthur's second legatee.
