Henry Alfred Lenglet

Henry Alfred was the son of Alfred Gustave (Gustave) Lenglet and Jemima Eugenie (Eugenie) Lenglet (nee Hulbert). His mother was the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Hulbert. She was born in London in 1856 and baptised at St Leonard, Shoreditch, on 2 November 1856. His father was born in France in about 1852. Gustave and Eugenie were married in 1879 (Jan/Feb/Mar) in Derby registration district. They were to have at least five children, Maud Bertha (b. 1879), Gustavus Adolphus (b. 1880), Gertrude, Henry Alfred (b. 1883) and Ada Pauline (b. 1884). No birth registration details have been found for Alfred or Gertrude but both children were named on the 1891 census. Alfred has been identified on other records but no further records have been found for Gertrude. There is also a record of an Alfred Lenglet whose birth was registered in Nottingham in the first quarter of 1877 and who died in 1877 (death registered Oct/Nov/Dec) and it is possible he was the son of Gustavus and Eugenie. In 1881 Gustave, a wholesale druggist, and Eugenie were living at 27 Newthorpe Street, Nottingham, with their two children, Maud Bertha (1) and Gustavus Adolphus (1 month). By 1891 Eugenie was a widow living at 28 Moorgate Street, Radford. Three of her children were at home the night of the census: Maud (11), Gertrude (10) and Alfred (8); their ages may have been recorded incorrectly on the census. In 1901 Eugenie and four children, Maud, Gustavus, Alfred and Ada, were living at 12A Denison Street, Radford. Eugenie was still at the same address in 1911 and was working as a clipper for a lace manufacturer. Her two oldest children, Maud (31, a runner-on for a hosiery manufacturer) and Gustavus, were still living with her. Alfred married Emma Lowe in Nottingham in 1908 (Oct/Nov/Dec) and their daughter, Edith Eugenia, was born on 23 November 1909. In 1911 Alfred (28), a grocer working on his own account, Emma (25), who assisted in her husband's business, and their daughter were living at 157 Birkin Avenue, Nottingham. Also living with them was a boarder, Herbert Rawson (24). Alfred and Emma later had a second daughter, Cissie I. Alfred's widow, Emma, never remarried and died in Sherwood Hospital, Nottingham, on 22 December 1964; her home was at 7 Broxtowe Street, Sherwood. His daughter Edith was married in 1936 (Franklin) and died in 1975 age 66 (death registered in Nottingham). No other records have yet been found for Cissie apart from the registration of her birth in 1912. Alfred's mother, Eugenie, died in Nottingham in 1914. Alfred's brother, L/1667 Driver Gustavus Adolphus Lenglet, RFA, was killed accidentally on 24 April 1916 and was buried in Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery. He left a wife, Eliza Ann, and a daughter, Doris Pauline. His sister, Maud Bertha, was married in 1916 (Bullens) and died in 1947 aged 67. There is a record of Ada's marriage in Nottingham in 1913 to Herbert Smith, the birth of sons in 1916 and 1920 and her death in Nottingham in 1968. No trace has been found of his other sister, Gertrude, other than the 1891 Census.
