John Henry Lander (junior) was born in 1899 at Sherwood he was the son of John Henry (senior) a house painter and Elizabeth Singleton Lander née Frear and the brother of Mabel Alice, Ellen, Mary Elizabeth, Kate and Albert Lander of 19 Daybrook Street, Sherwood. John Henry (senior) was born in 1863, Elizabeth Singleton Frear was born in 1868 both were born in Sherwood, they were married on 29th August 1886 at St John’s Church, Carrington, they had 10 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 18 Lloyd Street Nottingham. Lander's John Henry 48 yrs is a house painter, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 43 yrs and their children, Mabel Alice 19 yrs a lace finisher, Ellen 14 yrs a dress maker, John Henry 12 yrs a schoolboy, Mary Elizabeth 10 yrs, Kate 8 yrs and Albert 4 yrs of age.
Rifleman John Henry Lander enlisted on 6th November 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age falsely as 19 yrs and 9 months, (born in 1897) he was in the hosiery trade, he was posted to the 2nd battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps, he embarked from Southampton on 13th July 1916 landing at Le Harve the following day. He was killed in action on 15th August 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial.
Death notice published 28th August 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “LANDER. – Killed in action, August 15th, Rifleman J. Lander, King's Royal Rifles, aged 17, 19 Daybrook-street, Sherwood, late with J. B. Lewis and Son, Ltd. Sadly missed by his sorrowing mother, father, sisters, and brother.” In memoriam published 15th August 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “LANDER. – In loving memory of Rifleman J. H. Lander, K.R.R., of 19, Daybrook-street, Sherwood, aged 17, killed in action August 15th, 1916. Ever in our thoughts. – Mother, father, sisters, and brother.“LANDER. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Rifleman J. H. Lander, K.R.R., killed in action August 15th, 1916. Silently mourned. – Mabel and Nellie.” In memoriam published 15th August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “LANDER. – In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Rifleman J. H. Lander, killed in action August 15th, 1916.
