John Lait was born in 1877 he was baptised on 6th January 1878 at Long Eaton he was the son of the late Robert Edward Lait a general labourer and Martha Lait née Carter of 31 Marshall Street, Nottingham, Robert Edward was born in 1844 at Dursley, Gloucester Martha Carter was born in 1844 at Nottingham, they were married in 1875 at Nottingham, they had a further child Mary born 1879. In the 1911 census the family are living at 31 Marshall Street, Nottingham, Robert 67 yrs is a general labourer, he is living with his wife Martha 69 yrs and their son John 34 yrs a labourer.

Military History

Private John Lait served with the 16th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 10th October 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
