Family History

John Guy (junior) was baptised on 15th September 1897 at St John’s Church, Carrington, he was the son of John Guy (senior) a carter/labourer and Angelina Guy née Taylor of 2 Wellington Cottages, Hucknall Road, Sherwood. John Guy (senior) was born in 1867 at Morton, Angelina Taylor was born in 1871 at Wellow, they were married in 1891 at Worksop they went on to have 9 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Wellington Cottages, Hucknall Road, Sherwood, John (senior) 44 yrs is a carter/labourer, he is living with his wife Angelina 40 yrs and their children, Marthas 19 yrs a boxer in the lace trade, Henry 17 yrs an errand boy, John 13 yrs an errand boy, Margaret Esther 9 yrs, Thomas 5 yrs and Albert 2 yrs of age.

Military History

John enlisted in Nottingham. He was with 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters on Gallipoli and in Egypt, moving to France with them in July 1916. He fought on the Somme and at Messines before the battalion moved to the Ypres Salient. He was wounded when the battalion attacked Poelcappelle on 4 October 1917. He was sent via the medical chain to one of Boulogne's hospitals. He died of his wounds on 14 October 1917 and was buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, grave VIII. I. 54 John Morse
