Family History

George William Furniss was born on 2nd December 1893 at West Gorton, Manchester, he was the son of William Furniss a railway passenger guard and Alice Ann Furniss née Jackson of 248 Haydn Road, Sherwood. William was born in 1863 at Great Longstone, Bakewell, Derbyshire, Alice Ann Jackson was born in 1869 at Derby, they were married on 31st January 1893 at Shardlow, Derbyshire, they had 9 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census his parents were living at 86 Egypt Street, Basford, William 46 yrs is a passenger guard on the railway, he is living with his wife Alice 41 yrs and their 6 children. In the same 1911 census George William has left the family home, he is living with his aunt Ellen Furniss 35 yrs at Great Longstone, Bakewell, George is 17 yrs single and a general labourer.

Military History

Private George William Furniss attested on 12th January 1916 at Nottingham, giving his age as 22 yrs and 1 month, he was residing at 248 Haydn Road, Sherwood, he was a brewers labourer. he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised for war on 22nd February 1916 he arrived at the Derby Depot of the Sherwood Forester Regiment on 23rd February 1916. He landed in France on 6th September 1916 and was killed in action on 16th September 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
