Family History

Charles Foster was baptised on 22nd January 1886 at St Mary’s Church, Bulwell, he was the son of Henry a publicans celler man and Mary Foster née Bexton of 5 Rogers Place, Court Street, Nottingham. Henry was born in 1858 at Basford, Mary Bexton was born in 1863 at Linby, they were married on 7th November 1880 at St Mary’s Church, Bulwell, they had 2 other children, Emma b1882 and Maud Elizabeth b1890. Charles married Emily Mabel Allen (born 27th October 1877) on 6th April 1912 at St Andrews Church, Nottingham, they lived at 94 Hucknall Road, Carrington. Commencing 27th January 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Private Charles Foster attested on 10th December 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age as 30 yrs and 4 months, he was a stoker and engineer, he was living at 94 Hucknall Road, Sherwood. He was posted to the reserves and was mobilised for war on 6th June 1916 reporting to the Derby depot on 10th June 1916, he was posted with the service number 31073 to the Leicestershire Regiment. Transferred on 16th December 1916 to the York and Lancaster Regiment and joined the British Expeditionary Forces on 21st September 1916 he was killed in action on 29th January 1918 in Italy and is buried at Granezza Birtish Cemetery, Italy.
