Family History

Hebert Ellis was baptised on 2nd August 1896 at St John’s Church, Carrington, he was the son of Charles Herbert a lace maker and his first wife Elizabeth Ellis née Harris of 77 Melrose Street, Sherwood. Charles Herbert was born in 1857 at Nottingham, Elizabeth Harris was born in 1858 at Derby, she died in 1904 aged 44 yrs , they were married on 1st June 1879 at Nottingham they had 4 children. His father re married on 25th December 1906 at St John’s Church, Carrington to Sarah Radnall (born 1864 at Nottingham). In the 1911 census the family are living at 77 Melrose Street, Sherwood, Charles Herbert 54 yrs is a lace maker, he is living with his second wife Sarah 47 yrs and his son Herbert 14 yrs an errand boy.

Military History

Rifleman Herbert Ellis enlisted on11th September 1914 at Nottingham giving his age as 19 yrs and 95 days, (he was born in 1896 so only 18 yrs) he was a lace factory worker, he was posted to the King’s Royal Rifle Corps and landed in France on 30th July 1915. He was killed in action on 29th June 1916 and is buried at Berles-Au-Bois Churchyard extension, France.
