Recruitment was to be amongst the city's professional classes and focused on University College Nottingham where the Registrar Thomas Porteous Black was asked to take charge. Despite an early rush of volunteers for the unit, insufficient men came forward to form a battalion mainly because potential volunteers were enlisting elsewhere. Some men responding to Alderman Ball's call served with 12th (Pioneer) Battalion Sherwood Foresters whilst around 300, including Tom Cutts, formed 'C' Coy of 10th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment (The Grimsby Chums). He evidently transferred to 15th Sherwood Foresters when commissioned. Captain Thomas Porteous Black was killed in action at Gallipoli 9/8/1915 with 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters. David Nunn
