Richard Arthur Cope was baptised on 5th July 1896 at St John’s Church Carrington he was the brother of Harold and Edna Cope and the son of Richard a pork butcher and Eliza Ann Hurt of 24 Bloomfield Street, Nottingham. Richard (senior) was born in 1873, Eliza Ann Hurt was born in 1876 both were born in Nottingham, they were married on 6th August 1894 at the parish church at Basford, they had 3 children. In 1901 census the family lived at 9 Academy Place, Sherwood In 1911 Richard Arthur is living at 19 Church Drive, Carrington Nottingham) with his grandparents John and Isabella Hurt he is 14 yrs of age and is an errand boy. .

Military History

Private Richard Arthur Cope enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died of wounds on 5th September 1916 at the 29th casualty cleraing station, and is buried at Gezaincourt Communal Cemetery Extension,France.
