John Cooper known as Jack was born in 1893 at Carrington, he was the son of Harry a lace maker and Alice Cooper née Clarke of 7 Sherbrook Road, Carrington. Harry was born in 1856 at Carrington, Alice Clarke was born in 1858 at Sherwood, they were married on 6th November 1880 at St John’s Church, Carrington, they had 8 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family were living at 7 Sherbrooke Road, Carrington, Harry 58 yrs is a lace maker, he is living with his wife Alice 53 yrs a lace mender and their 6 children, William 29 yrs a fitter, Emily 23 yrs a pinafore maker, Ernest 21yrs a pinafore cutter, John 18 yrs a domestic gardener, Harry 18 yrs a butchers assistant and Ethel 15 yrs a blouse finisher. John married Mabel Davies (born 6th December 1889) they were married on 12th February 1916 at St John’s church, Carrington, they lived at 39 Blyth Street, Mapperley. Commencing 11th March 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week. In 1921 she married Frederick Strutt and they lived at 10 Joyce Avenue Sherwood Nottingham.
Private John Cooper enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 7th battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps, he was killed in action on 27th August 1917 , having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial (Panel 115 to 119 and 162A and 163A).
Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged) 24 September 1917: 'Cooper. Killed in action August 27th, Rifleman John (Jack) Cooper KRR, husband of Mabel Cooper. Wife. Son of Harry and Alice Cooper of 7 Sherbrooke Road, Carrington, age 24. Mother, father, sister, brothers Ernie and Harry.'
