Family History

William Butler was born in 1899 at Radford, he was the son of Sam a gardener and Mary Butler née Simpson of 13 Yew Tree Avenue, Carrington. Sam was born in 1863 at Bawtry, Mary Simpson was born in 1872 at Granby, they were married in 1898 at Nottingham, they had a daughter Zillah Edith born in 1911. In the 1911 census the family are living at Rotherby, Leicestershire, Sam 46 yrs is a gardener, he is living with his wife May 39 yrs and their two children, William 11 yrs and Zillah Edith 10 yrs of age.

Military History

Private William Butler enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 8th battalion North Staffordshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 6th June 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Sissons Memorial, France.
