Charles William Briggs was born in Goole, Yorkshire in 1896 he was the son of Alfred a railway engine driver and Mary Elizabeth Briggs née Sutcliffe, Alfred was born in 1855 at Pontefract, Mary Elizabeth Sutcliffe was born in 1853 at Hunslet, they were married on 27th March 1875 at Goole, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 115 Jackson Street, Goole, Alfred 61 yrs is a railway engine driver, he is living with his wife Mary Elizabeth 59 yrs and their children, Laura 25 yrs a hospital nurse and Charles 13 yrs a scholar. His grandfather Charles Seaton Briggs lived at 306 Hucknall Road, Nottingham.

Military History

Private Charles William Briggs enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2/th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he was killed in action, 26th September 1917, age 21, in the attack near Wieltje, near Ypres, Belgium having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. Panel 99 to 102 and 162 to 162A.
