Joseph Bond was born on 1st March 1895 at Derby, he was the son of Joseph Henry a prison warder and Kathleen Bond née Gordon of 15 The Mount, Redhill, Nottingham. Joseph Henry was born in 1865 at Peterborough, Kathleen Gordon was born in 1872 at Chesterfield, they were married on 3rd April 1893 at St Lukes, Derby, they had 8 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at Brough Street, Derby, Joseph Henry 46 yrs is a prison warder he is living with his wife Kate 39 yrs and their children, Mary Ann 17 yrs a thread warper, Joseph 16 yrs a hosiery hand, Thomas 11 yrs, Catherine 6 yrs, Francis 4 yrs and Gertrude 15 months old.
Private Joseph Bond enlisted at Coventry on 1st June 1914, he served with the 1st battalion Coldstream Guards, he landed in France on 9th October 1914 and was severely wounded during fighting aroud Ypres, he was admitted to No 4 clearing hospital where he died on 21st November 1914. He is buried at Popernghe Old Military Cemetery, Belgium.
