Family History

Thomas Bentley was born in 1895 he was baptised on 22nd November 1895 at St John’s Church, Carrington he was the son of Samuel a corporation labourer and Kate Bentley, née Phoenix of 21 Osbourne Street, Sherwood. Samuel was born in 1862 Kate Phoenix was born in 1863 both were born in Sherwood they had twelve children but two died in infancy prior to the 1911 Census. Thomas's siblings were - Sarah, Samuel, Mary, Kate, Annie, Herbert, George, Percy and Horace. In the 1911 census the family lived at 5 Spondon Street, Sherwood, Samuel 49 yrs is a corporation labourer, he is living with his wife Kate 49 yrs and their children, including Thomas 16 yrs an errand boy.

Military History

Private Thomas Bentley enlisted at Derby, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died of wounds on 18th September 1917 and is buried at : Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 19. Row D . Grave 11.
