Family History

Robert Bentley was born in 1879 at Carrington, he was the son of William a shop keeper grocer and Elizabeth Bentley née Gray of 22 Market Place, Carrington, Nottingham. William was born in 1850 at Leicester, Elizabeth Gray was born in 1850 at Bingham, they were married at St John’s Church on 15th August 1869, they had 5 children. In the 1911 census the family were living at 22 Market Place, Carrington, William 61 yrs is a shop keeper grocer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 61 yrs and their children, Florence 41 yrs a net mender, Eliza 37 yrs, Clara 34 yrs and Robert 32 yrs an assistant in his fathers business.

Military History

Private Robert Bentley enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Carrington, he initially served with the service number 39458 in the North Staffordshire Regiment, later he was transferred to the 10th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 17th April 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium
