Family History

Clarence Henry Armstrong was born in 1898 at Radcliffe on Trent, he was the son of Walter Henry a licensed victualler and the late Ada Armstrong née Shaw of 59 Church Street, Carrington. Walter Henry was born in 1851 at Loughborough, Ada Shaw was born in 1867 at Delph Lancashire, she died in 1906 aged 39 yrs, they were married on 22nd August 1892 at St Nicholas Church, Nottingham, they had three children, Walter Bernard b 1897 Clarence Henry b1898, Thomas Haines b1902 all were born at Radcliffe on Trent. In the 1911 census the family are living at 59 Church Street, Carrington Walter Henry 60 yrs is a retired licensed victualler, he is a widow, he is living with his sons, Walter Bernard 14 yrs, Clarence Henry 12 yrs and Thomas Haines 9 yrs of age, also living with the family is Frances Masters 37 yrs a house keeper.

Military History

Clarence Henry Armstrong enlisted at Nottingham, whilst residing at Carrington, he was under age as when he was killed in action he was aged 17 yrs, he went to France on 27th October 1915 and was killed in action, 1st July 1916, aged 17, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
