Family History

Arthur George Aldred was born on 22nd April 1886 at Ilkeston he was baptised on 1st May 1887 at Ilkeston parish church, he was the son of Edward Aldred a coal miner and Frances Ellen Aldred née Fox, Edward was born in 1864 and Frances Ellen Fox was born in 1865 both were born in Ilkeston, they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham, registration district, they also had a daughter Gertrude born 1890. His mother Frances Ellen appears to have remarried although no marriage can be found to a John Booth (no death of Edward Aldred also found ) In the 1911 census we find George Arthur Aldred 24 yrs a loam grinder in an iron foundry, he is shown as being a step son, he is living with John Booth 70 yrs a postman and his wife Frances Ellen Booth 45 yrs and two step sisters Mabel Fox Booth 12 yrs and Winifred Booth 8 yrs, John Booth stated that he had been married 13 yrs (1898) and had two children. In 1913 Arthur George married Sarah Ann Shaw (born 29th November 1886) their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at 30 Haddon Street, Nottingham and had a daughter Margery born 12th February 1916. Commencing 13th May 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Military History

Private Arthur George Aldred enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 16777 in the Seaforth Highlanders. Later transferring to the 20th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 25th October 1917 having no known grave his name iis commemorated on the Tyne Cott Memorial panels 19-23.
