Family History

Thomas Cobb Dolby was born in 1889 in Laxton and was the son of Henry Cobb Dolby a woodsman and Sarah Jane Dolby née Kitchen of Laxton Newark Nottinghamshire. His father Henry Cobb was born in 1860 in Laxton and his mother Sarah Jane Kitchen was born in 1864 in Wellow. They were married in 1886 their marriage is recorded in the Southwell Registration area, they went on to have the following additional children, all born in Laxton, Mary b1887 , George b1891, Henry b1893 and William b1896. In the 1911 census the family are living in Laxton however Thomas has left the family home , he is by now 22 yrs of age, single and a farm servant working as a garthman on a farm , he is living with Herbert Richardson 30 yrs a farmer, and is one of 4 servant living at Woodhouse Common Farm at Norwell. At the time of his death his parents were living at East Park, Moorhouse, Newark

Military History

Lance Corporal Thomas Cobb Dolby enlisted into the army in Derby on 27th April 1916, he gave his age as 27 yrs and 185 days , he gave his address as East Park, Moorhouse, Newark he stated he was single and a baker/miller. He was posted to the 3rd battalion North Staffordshire Regiment. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 12th January 1917. On 3rd September 1916 he was transferred to the 7th battalion North Staffordshire Regiment and sent out to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. He embarked from Devonport in England on 4th September 1916, arriving and disembarking at Basra, Iraq on 28th September 1916. He went missing during action in Iraq on the 25th January 1917 and was later presumed killed in action on that date. His body was never recovered , his name is commemorated on the Basra War Memorial, Iraq.
