Family History

Albert Edward was born in 1895 at Kneesall and was the son of George a wood labourer on the Thoresby Estate and his first wife the late Mary Jane Hazzard nee Savage, of Kneesall, Newark. His father George was born in 1868 at Kneesall , his mother Mary Jane Savage was born in 1869 at Radford, she died in 1900 aged 30 yrs, they were married on 31st December 1890 at Kneesall , they went on to have the following children William b1891, Albert Edward b1895 and Rosetta b1898 all were born in Kneesall. His father re married in 1901 to Annie Elizabeth Warriner b1869 at Lincoln they were married in 1901 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration district, they went on to have a daughter Ruby born 1906 at Kneesall. In the 1911 census the family are living at Kneesall, Newark, Nottinghamshire and are shown as George 42 yrs a wood labourer on the Thoresby Estate, he is living with his wife Annie Elizabeth 42 yrs and their daughters Rosetta 13 yrs a scholar and Ruby 5 yrs. In the same 1911 census we find that Albert Edward has left the family home, he is living at Caunton Lodge, he is shown as being 15 yrs a farm servant living with Joseph Glover 42 yrs a farmer and his family.

Military History

Private Albert Edward Hazzard enlisted 22nd October 1914 at Newark, Nottinghamshire, giving his age as 19 yrs and 5 months, his occupation was a farm labourer , he lived at Kneesall with his next of kin his father George. He was mobilised on 14th June 1915 aged 20 years and 47 days and his occupation was now a farmer. He served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and went to France on 25th June 1915 embarking from Southampton. He died on 14th October 1915. Age 20 years, having no known grave his name is commemorated on Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
