Family History

Henry Abell was born in 1898 at Kirk Ireton, Derbyshire, he was the only son of Benjamin a head teacher and Dora Abell née Mansfield of Kirk Ireton, Derbyshire. His father Benjamin was born in 1865 at Wirksworth, his mother Dora Mansfield was born in 1870 at Somercotes, they were married on 23rd October 1895 at Alfreton parish church. In the 1911 census the family are living at Kirk Ireton, Derbyshire, Benjamin 45 yrs is a head teacher he is living with his wirfe Dora 41 yrs and their son Henry 13 yrs of age as scholar.

Military History

Corporal Henry Abel l was called up and enlisted at Derby on 13th August 1916 giving his age as 18 yrs and 11 months, his next of kin was his father Benjamin of Kirk Ireton, he stated he had seen service in the Officer Training Corps for 5 months prior to being called up. He was posted on 14th August 1916 to the Royal Garrison Artillery. He died of wounds at the 91st Filed Ambulance, France on 12th July 1917, he is buried at Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium.
