Herbert was born in 1897 in Sneinton and was the son of James a hawker and Ellen West née Lee of 14 Virginia Street Sneinton Nottingham. His father was born in 1865 in Lenton and his mother Ellen Lee was born in 1866 in Nottingham, they were married in 1883 at Nottingham and went on to have 7 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their children listed in the 1901/1911 census are Nellie b1887, James b1890, Charles b1893 and Herbert b1897, all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 14 Virginia Street, Sneinton, Nottingham and are shown as James 46 yrs a hawker he is living with his wife Ellen 45 yrs working in the lace trade and his son Herbert 15 yrs a fitter.
Private Herbert West, enlisted in Nottingham, giving his residence as Sneinton and served with the 15th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 20th July 1916. [1] He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.Pier and Face 10C, 10D, 11A [1] Official sources give his date of death as 14th July 1916 but the battalion was not in the line on that day. In memoriam published 20th July 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WEST. – In loving memory of our dear son and brother Herbert, Sherwoods,18, Virginia-street, age 20, who fell in action July 20th, 1916.
