Father: William Tipping, born 1859 in Nottingham and working as a hosiery framework Knitter. Mother Mary Ellen Tipping, born in 1859 in Nottingham. (died 1904) Brother: Harry, born in 1879 and working as a gas fitter. The family lived at 36 Sneinton Road, Nottingham before moving to Benedict Road, Nottingham. Frederick William Tipping married Florence Tipping, nee Millington. She was born in 1882 in Nottingham. They had three children; Alfred Charles, born in 1905, Harry, born in 1907 and Frederick, born in 1909. All the children were born in Nottingham. The family lived at 139 Carlton Hill, Carlton, Nottingham before moving to Holborn Avenue, Nottingham.
Gunner Frederick Tipping enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 186165 with the Royal Field Artillery, later transferring to the Tank Corps and served with 'D' Battalion, Tank Corps. He was involved in the heavy fighting at the Battle of Cambrai, when tanks were used en masse for the first time. His machine 'Deborah' was knocked out and he was killed in action on 20/11/1917. He was buried in Flesquieres Hill British Cemetery Grave Reference: III B 9
His brother, Private Harry Tipping, 1st Battalion King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment), had been killed in action on 14th December 1916. His name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Death notices published 18th December 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “TIPPING. – Killed in action, November 20th, Gunner Fred Tipping (late of Thomas Adams), beloved husband of Florrie Tipping, Holborn-avenue. – Sorrowing wife & boys. “TIPPING. – Killed in action, November 20th, Gunner Fred Tipping, Tank Corps, beloved son of Mr. and Mrs. Tipping, Bentinck-street.
