Family History

Herbert Spencer was born in 1875 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late Samuel James Spencer a cab driver and Ann Spencer née Wood. Samuel James was born in 1851 at Mansfield he died in 1891 aged 40 yrs, Ann Wood was born in 1853 at Grantham, Lincolnshire they were married in 1871 at Nottingham and had 7 children. In 1881 they lived at 1 Lowes Yard St Mary's Nottingham. Herbert married Mary Harris (born 28th July 1876) on 11th September 1897 in the Parish Church at Sneinton, Nottingham, they had the following children, Mabel b.13/12/1901, Samuel James b.25/8/02 Percy Lawrence b.17/6/1903, Edith Emma b.16/8/1905 In 1911 the family lived at 17 Upper Eldon Street and later at 36 Upper Eldon Street Sneinton Nottingham.

Military History

Private Herbert Spencer enlisted at Nottingham on 19th April 1915 and was posted 6th October 1916 to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. Giving his age as 37 yrs and 2 months he was a town labourer and lived at 36 Upper Eldon Street, Sneinton with his wife. He served on the Western Front and was killed in action on 27th June 1917 whilst serving with the 14th battalion York and Lancaster Regiment, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial Bay 8
