Family History

Harry Barlow was born in 1898 at Farndon and was the son of the late Edward a foundry labourer and Lucy Barlow née Ward of Farndon.. His father Edward was born in 1857 at Swinderby, Lincolnshire and died in 1908 at Newark aged 58 yrs, his mother Lucy Ann Ward was born in 1860 at Moorehouse, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1878 at Newark and went on to have the following children, Harriett b1879, George William b1882, Elizabeth b1883, Richard b1885, Edward b1888, Walter b1891, Annie b1893, Ernest b1896, Harry b18989 and Florence Ellen b1900 all were born in Farndon. In the 1911 census his widowed mother is living at Farndon village and is shown as Lucy Ann 50 yrs a widow she is living with her son 13 yrs a farm worker.

Military History

305916 Lance Corporal Harry Barlow enlisted in 2/8th Bn. Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) Territorial Force battalion at Newark on Trent. The battalion was formed at Newark on 11 September 1914 as a second line TF battalion. From April 1916 until January 1917 the battalion was based in Ireland. They returned to England and Salisbury Plain before moving to France on 26 February 1917 as part of 178th Brigade, 59th Division. It is likely that Harry was with them until the battalion was disbanded on 6 February 1918 (France) He would then have been posted to 1st battalion and he was killed with them. On 13th June 1918 what was left of the battalion after the Chemin des Dames Battle were out of the line. He died of wounds, 24th June 1918, aged 20. at a field hospital at Lappion, France near Sissone, France. He is buried at Sissonne British Cemetery, Aisne, France. grave H 19.
