Family History

William Shipley (junior) was born in 1887 at Nottingham, he was the son of William Shipley (senior) a house painter and Elizabeth Shipley née Russell of 6 Traffic Street, Nottingham. William (senior) was born in 1853 at Bourne, he died in 1915 aged 62 yrs, Elizabeth Russell was born in 1839 at Bristol she died in 1918 aged 79 yrs they were married on 26th July 1875 at St Martins Church Birmingham. In 1901 they lived at 25 Grey Friars Gate Nottingham and by 1911 were living at 6 Traffic Street, Nottingham. William Shipley (junior) married Elizabeth Ann Holroyd (born 25th April 1881 ) on 5th May 1906 at St Stephens Church, Sneinton, they lived at 23 Brand Street, Meadow Lane, Nottingham they had a son Frederick William born 13th July 1907. Commencing 4th March 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings a week.

Military History

Sergeant William Shipley volunteered for service and following training was sent to Egypt, arriving on 12/7/1915. He later moved to France and was part of the 6th Army Tramway Company, R.E. He was caught up in the fighting during the Third Battle of Ypres and was seriously wounded. He died at the casualty clearing station at Dozinghem during an enemy air raid on 20th August 1917 and is buried at Dozinghem Military Cemetery Grave Reference: IV J 11
