It seems that James Sands was placed on the Sneinton memorial in error. He was the son of Richard (1861-1901) and Emma (née Peet) Sands. He was the brother of Mabel Sands who married William Edward Eardley at Nottingham in 1904. In 1901, they lived at 26, Notintone Terrace, Sneinton, Nottingham with Richard's mother Ann Sands and brother James Robert Sands who died at Nottingham in 1917. His whereabouts after 1901 remain unknown. It is possible he emigrated to Canada in 1926 and married Olive Dixon who died in 1938 (see obituray). James Richard Sands, the correct age, died at Islington in 1940 and this may have been the man listed at Sneinton. Alternatively, James Richard Sands, born at Nottingham, lived at Islington in 1911 with his wife Charlotte (née Edwards). However, Sands's age is cited as 39 although it is possible this was a false declaration for some reason.
He may have served with the Royal Fusiliers (E/461) [consistent with London residence] before being commissioned and transferred to the Machine Gun Corps 8/10/1918 and surviving the war. Alternatively, he may have moved to Canada before the Great War (there are a number of JR Sands listed serving with the Canadian Army).
Ottawa Journal, Thursday July 16th 1938: 'Sands. At a local hospital on Thursday July 16th 1938, Olive Maud Nixon, deeply beloved wife of JR Sands in her 42nd year. Funeral from the residence of her father Mr John Nixon, 475, McLeod Street, on Saturday 18th inst. at 1.30 pm for service at St Luke's Anglican church at 2pm. Interment at Conroy Cemetery.'
