By Robert's great-niece: 'Robert was my great-uncle, brother of my grandfather Edwin and the son of Robert and Annie Reynolds. Born in Tiverton, Devon the family moved first to Manchester in 1893 then to Nottingham in about 1894/95.' Robert Henry was born in 1891 in Tiverton and was the son of Robert an upholsterer and Annie Reynolds née Slater. His father was born in Tiverton in 1868 and his mother Annie Slater was born in 1861 also in Tiverton, they were married in Tiverton in 1890 and went on to have 5 children , who were: - Alice b1888, Robert b1891, Edwin b1892, Ethel b1894 and Annie b 1902, all the children were born in Tiverton apart from Ethel who was born in Manchester and Annie who was born in Nottingham . In the 1911 census the family are living at 79 Pym St, St Anns, and are shown as : - Robert 43 yrs an upholsterer in a furniture factory, he is living with his wife Annie 50 yrs a silk winder in a factory and their children Edwin 19 yrs a carters mate, Ethel 17 yrs a back girl in lace factory and Anne 9 yrs a scholar. Meanwhile Robert Henry on the 1911 census is a serving soldier in the 2nd battalion York and Lancaster Regiment and is to be found in barracks with his battalion at Blackdown barracks, Farnborough, Hampshire , he is shown as being 21 yrs and single. Robert Henry married his wife Emma Harrison (born 25th June 1891 ) in 1911 at Nottingham, they lived at 7 Grafton Terrace, Turner Street, Nottingham, they went on to have 2 children, Dorothy Ethel born 11th September 1911 and Robert Henry born 26th December 1913. Following his death his widow Emma was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 10th April 1915.
Private Robert Henry Reynolds a general labourer at the time of his enlistment in Nottingham on 31st December 1907 served with the 2nd battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. He was killed in action France & Flanders and is buried in Vailly British Cemetery, Aisne, France (grave reference I. E. 26).
It states that on enlisting Robert was born Nottingham but he was born Tiverton, Devon, but he grew up in Nottingham. Nottingham Post notice (abridged) 17 October 1914: 'Private RH Reynolds of York and Lancaster Regiment, late of 7 Grafton Terrace, Turner Street, Nottingham, killed in action September 23rd.'
