Samuel Messom

He was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Ann Messom nee Parker, who had married in Nottingham in 1874. Samuel's mother died in 1911 (registered Jan/Feb/Mar) and his widowed father completed the 1911 census with the information that he had been married for 37 years and that he and his wife had had 12 children born alive of whom only 8 were still living. Eight children were named on the census between 1881 and 1911: Thirza, Edward, Millicent, Samuel, William, Ethel, John and Elizabeth Mary. In 1881 Samuel and Elizabeth were living at 31 Camden Street, Sneinton, Nottingham, with their four children Thirza (9), Edward (7), Millicent (6) and Samuel (1). By 1891 they had moved to 4 Camden Street, Sneinton, Nottingham, and had seven children: Thirza, Edward, Millicent, Samuel, William (9), Ethel (7) and John (3). His parents were at the same address ten years later but only Samuel, William, Ethel, John and a fourth daughter, Elizabeth Mary (7), were living at home on the night of the census. By the time of the 1911 census when his father was widowed only the youngest daughter, Elizabeth, was still living in the family home on Camden Street. Samuel had married for nine years by the time of the 1911 census and he and his wife, Ethel Ellen (Nellie) were living at 3 Bradbury Street, Colwick Road, Nottingham. They had three children; Ethel (8), Doris Irene (6) and Edward (2), all of whom had been born in Sneinton. At the time of his death the family was living at 42 Whittier Road, Sneinton. His younger brother, Sapper John Herbert Messom, Royal Marines RM Division Engineers Royal Naval Division, died of wounds on 27 July 1915 at the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar (Portsmouth) and was buried in Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery. He left a wife, Ethel Ellen (Nellie) and three daughters, Lilian Ethel, Edith E. and Ethel E. who lived at 42 Whittier Road, Sneinton.
