Family History

George Lockwood was born in 1879 he was the son of the late Felix (1840-1891 ) and Mary Lockwood née Marson (1839-1919) and the brother of John, Arthur and Sarah Lockwood. In 1901 they lived at 24 Thorsby Street Sneinton Nottingham. George married Eliza Rebecca Copeland (born in 1877 at Sleaford) in 1898 at Nottingham, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Beaumont Street, Nottingham, George is 32 yrs and is a general labourer, he is living with his wife Eliza 34 yrs and their children, Edith 13 yrs, Edward 10 yrs, Nellie 9 yrs, Mary 7 yrs, Leslie 3 yrs and Albert 5 months of age. Eliza Lockwood was to die on 1st March 1915, his pension record card shows the following children Nellie born 24th January 1902, May born 12th January 1904, Leslie born 21st August 1907, Albert 19th October 1910 and Sydney born 31st May 1913 it further shows the guardian of these children to be Sarah A Cooper of 21 South Street, Nottingham who was awarded a pension of 31 shillings a week in respect of the children which commenced on 24th December 1917.

Military History

Private George Lockwood, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2/7th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles), he was killed in action on 5th June 1917 during the German shelling of the line at Bilhem Farm, France. He is buried in Metz-en-Couture Communal Cemetery British Cemetery.
