Richard Rawson Cooper was born in 1888, he married Martha Spencer in 1910 and they had a son Richard Henry Cooper born 14th October 1910 . In 1911 the family lived at 61 Brand Street Meadow Lane Nottingham along with Martha’s mother and four other boarders. Martha remarried John Boyer at Nottingham O/N/D/1917. His pension record card shows that he was separated from his wife for 5 years prior to his death and she was therefore not entitled to a pension, she was award 5 shillings a week on 29th November 1917 in respect of their son.
Private Richard Rawson Cooper, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 10th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. He landed in France on 23rd December 1915 and was killed in action 28th April 1917. Having no known grave, he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.Bay 8
Nottingham Evening Post 22nd April 1918: ‘COOPER. – In memory of Pte. Dick Cooper, killed in action between April 21st and 28th, 1917. Not forgotten by mother and father-in-law, Mrs. and Mr. [Jane] Spencer, Meadow-lane, Nottingham, and little Len, Harry.’ ‘COOPER. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Richard Rawson (Dick), who was killed in action between April 21st and 28th, 1917.
