Family History

Charles Bentley was born in 1884 he was the son of George a park superintendent and Fanny Bentley née Allsopp of The Lodge, Derby Road, Nottingham. George was born in 1858 and Fanny Allsopp was born in 1859 both were born in Nottingham, they were married in 1879 at Radford, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 his parents and siblings were living at The Lodge, Derby Road, Nottingham, George 52 yrs is a park superintendent with the city council, he is living with his wife Fanny 50 yrs and 5 of their children. Charles married Sarah Jane Brewill (born 1886 Nottingham) on 6th October 1906 at St Albans Church, Sneinton, they had 4 children, 2 sadly died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Florence Nelly born 21st July 1908 and Charles Frederick born 20th August 1913. In 1911 Charles 27 yrs an electrical engineer and fitter is living with his wife Sarah Jane 25 yrs and their daughter Florence Nelly 2 yrs, at 79 Henry Street, Sneinton, Nottingham. His widow was awarded a pension of 8 shillings and 6 pence a week commencing 17th April 1916 in respect of her children His widow re married a soldier Henry Thomas Hadley on 21st November 1916.

Military History

Sergeant Charles Bentley enlisted at Leicester, he served with the 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He landed in France on 12th December 1914. He was killed in action on 25th September 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
