John Bales was born in 1894 he was the son of William a gas labourer for the city council and Eliza Bales née Greasley and the brother of Harold Bales. William was born in 1848 at Carlton, Eliza Greasley was born in 1852 at Carlton, they were married in 1874 at Nottingham and went on to have 8 children, sadly 6 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1901 they lived at 17 Ebenezer Square Alfred Street South and in 1911 at 14 Gordon Road (both Nottingham).
Private John Bales attested for service on 10th December 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age as 22 yrs 3 months and his occupation as a hosiery worker living with his father William at 14 Gordon Road, Nottingham. Posted to the reserves he was mobilised for war on 16th February 1916 and reported to the Derby Depot where he was posted on 22nd April 1916 to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment with the service number 36090. He landed in France on 22nd July 1916 and was wounded in action on 16th August 1917, a gun shot wound in his right arm, he was returned to England on 22nd August 1917. Once recovered he returned to France on 2nd April 1918 and served with the 9th battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers, he was again wounded and admitted to the 62nd Casualty clearing station where he died of his wounds on 18th April 1918. He is buried at Haringhe 9bandeghem) Cemetery, Belgium. His birth was registered J/A/S/1893 so he may have been 25 when killed.
