Phillip Henry Tatham was born in 1892 at Ilkeston and was the son of Henry a painter and decorator and Emily Jane Tatham née Aldred of 22 Stanton Road, Ilkeston . His father Henry was born in 1866 at Ilkeston, his mother Emily Jane Aldred was born in 1867 also at Ilkeston, they were married in 1888 their marriage was recorded at the Basford registration district, they had 3 children, Fanny b1889, Phillip b1892 and Frank b1894 all were born in Ilkeston. In the 1911 census the family lived at 22 Stanton Road, Ilkeston and were shown as Henry 45 yrs a painter and decorator, he is living with his wife Emily 44 yrs and their children Fanny 22 yrs a teacher, Phillip 19 yrs a decorator and Frank 17 yrs a lace maker. Phillip Henry married his wife Hilda Kerry on 1st July 1916 at St Johns Church, Ilkeston, they lived at 33 Kirkby Avenue, Ilkeston and had a son Norman born 1917. Following his death his widow Hilda was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence which commenced on 25th November 1918.
Corporal Phillip Henry Tatham enlisted on 21st February 1916 at Ilkeston, he gave his age as 24yrs and 10 months, his address was 52 South Street, Ilkeston and his occupation as a painter, his next of kin was his father Henry of the same address but was later amended to his wife Hilda. He was posted to the South Staffordshire Regiment and later transferred on 19th February 1917 to the Machine Gun Corps and embarked from Southampton on 13th July 1917 landing at Le Harve the following day. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 3rd October and to Corporal on 14th October 1917. He was reported missing in action and later confirmed as killed in action on 24th March 1918. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozierers Memorial panel 90-93.
